IAVA Statement on Withdrawal of US Troops from Iraq

“Today is a historic day for the United States and for the people of Iraq. And it’s an especially poignant time for the veteran community. Many of us gave a large part of our lives, and some gave all, in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn,” said Iraq veteran and IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff. “All Americans should be grateful for the sacrifices of those who served in Iraq over the past 8 years.

IAVA Hosts Fleet Week Job Fair for Bay Area Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans

IAVA announced its First Annual Fleet Week Smart Job Fair will be held from 12-5 p.m. on October 6 at the War Memorial Green Room in San Francisco. It is the first of five events being held around the country as part of IAVA’s Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) America partnership with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

IAVA Veterans Unite at Ground Zero to Honor 9/11

In observance of 9/11, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the nation’s first and largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization representing veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, will unite at memorial services and service projects in tribute to 9/11 victims, their families and first-responders. IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff, a 9/11 First-Responder, New York native, and Iraq veteran, will represent IAVA’s more than 100,000 members nationwide at Ground Zero.

Eight years ago, after the capture of Saddam Hussein in a spider hole, TIME Magazine named The American Soldier its “Person of the Year.” It was an iconic cover story that put a face on these wars and played a decisive role in getting Americans to separate personal politics from their treatment of our troops.

Ahead of Jobs Report, IAVA Applauds President Obama’s New Veterans' Employment Initiative

Today, IAVA applauded President Obama’s proposal to tackle high rates of new veteran unemployment.  Through the initiative, the President will issue a call to action for the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs and Labor, as well as businesses nationwide to provide skills and training for new veterans transitioning from military service. He will also propose tax credits to encourage employers to locate and hire veterans for the civilian workforce.

VOW to Hire our Heroes

Lost in the headlines about the mind-numbing debt ceiling debate and Japan’s  Women’s World Cup victory, the unemployment rate for new veterans jumped to 13.3 percent in June, four percentage points higher than the national average. Last time we polled IAVA’s membership, they reported close to 20% unemployment.
