Iraq is on voters' minds, Moul says

U.S. House of Representatives candidate Maxine Moul said Tuesday the war in Iraq is the main topic among voters she meets along the 1st District campaign trail.
"I've had so many people express their concerns about the war," said Moul. "They want to know what we're accomplishing there."
Moul, a Democrat seeking to unseat Republican Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, called on the current administration to issue "benchmarks put together by the best strategic commanders."
"We went into Iraq without clear planning," Moul said, noting the duration of the Iraq war is nearing that of World War II.
Moul said veterans consistently ask her to remember them if she gets to Washington. She cited a "report card" issued recently by the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Association which graded Senate and House members on their support of the troops.
The IAVA Web site reported the veterans' group arrived at the ratings by reviewing all legislation voted on in the Congress since Sept. 11, 2001. For each piece of legislation that affected troops, veterans or military families, IAVA took a position either in support of, or in opposition to its passage.
The letter grades were derived from the percentage of times that each legislator's vote matched the official IAVA stance.
Fortenberry, who entered office in January 2005, got a D, Moul said.
